Baby Dolittle

Our neighbor brought her dog Ansel into our yard to play yesterday.

Naiah (10 months old) sat on my lap and watched him bound around the yard chasing sticks and kids. When Ansel started to wear out, he trotted over to visit the baby. Slowly and gently, he nudged his nose into her face, hoping to give her a kiss. Naiah gave him a look of deep disgust (his breath wasn't very fresh) and swatted him on the nose.

"That's a doggy," I told her. "Doggy. The doggy says--"

"Woof!" said Naiah.

I read your comment on Roxanne's blog about the Harry Potter books. My husband and I are in withdrawals, waiting for the next, and with tears, the last installment of the Harry Potter series. My oldest son Derek, who is in the 3rd grade, is about half way through Prisoner of Azkaban. So I am living vicariously through him. We also listen to the books on tape in the car, right now we are all listening to Order of the Phoenix, and Harry and friends are in the Ministry of Magic on the rescue mission. I agree that JK Rowlings is awesome. I love that my 9 year old and my husband and I can all get totally excited over the same literature. What a gift.

I know what you mean about withdrawals. We got into such a habit of reading HP at night, that now I can't decide what to do with myself. We're going to the library today to see if we can find something satisfying to read at night while we wait. I can't believe it's a whole year from now! We're planning another read-through of the first six books next spring, so we'll be ready. I feel like such a geek!

We are all geeks. . .but who wouldn't be with such a great series of books to read. Her characters are so well rounded. . .and she has kept up with the details of all the different story lines beautifully.

And I will admit here, and only here, that I have even begun to check out a few of the websites for las or a new book to read. I had/have several theories after the end of HBP regarding horcruxes and Dumbledore, and Snape, and Fawkes, and Hagrid, and Regulus Black. . .I have been known just to pick up a copy of one of my books and read a particularly interesting part again. They are so well written.

Rebecca--don't know if you are reading the books to your kids or not--ours are still too young. . .but if you're looking for a good series to read this summer for you--look into the Mitford books by Jan Karon if you've not read them--they begin with "At Home in Mitford." Sarah turned me on to those a couple of summers back.

Another great fantasy series is The Prydian series by Lloyd Alexander--it begins with "The Book of Three" and is well worth the read.

I occassionally go to Jo Rowlings "official" website to see what she's written on her journal page. . .one time she said she hoped the last book wouldn't be as long as "Order of the Pheonix". . .I hope it's longer!!!!

Roxanne-- I read Jo Rowlings' site too! I'm so glad I'm not the only person my age getting hooked like this. It just fascinates me to read how she maps it all out, and how she interacts with the characters and even knows all their family history. Right now Jason and I are going to read everything by Roald Dahl, starting with the Chocolate Factory and the Glass Elevator. But maybe after that we'll check out the ones you suggested. Thanks for the advice!

So. . .

YAHOO!!!!! Boil 'em up sister!!!!

And ENJOY!

Roxanne
